FRIDAY November 7 2014 Issue 1085

Crime spree across the Coast Police are urging locals to be vigilant after a crime spree in Beachlands and Maraetai over the past 10 days saw 15 incidents reported. Four vehicles were stolen from outside properties while attempts were made to steal another four. Several other vehicles were broken into and items stolen. Last Saturday a beachgoer at Maraetai had a black knapsack stolen as he dozed on the sand and another had jewellery stolen from the pocket of her swimsuit bag while she was having a swim. A child’s scooter was stolen from Beachlands Domain the same day. A burglary was reported the following day in Third

View Ave in Beachlands, after a woman who had been working in her back garden found someone had entered her house through the ranchslider at the front and stolen items from a coffee table. Police suspect a possible link to the inorganic rubbish collection that was happening locally. “There could be a possible link but we are also coming up to summer with more people coming out to the Coast,” says a Police spokesperson. “In most cases the vehicles that were stolen were locked but always do lock up and don’t leave any valuables inside. Be vigilant - call Police on 111 or 261- 1300 if you see anything suspicious or the incident has just occured. Don’t just post it on Facebook.”

Charity Garden Ramble happening this Saturday

There’s still time to buy tickets for this Saturday’s Pohutukawa Coast Charity Garden Ramble. Twelve of Beachlands’ and Maraetai’s most gorgeous private gardens will be open from 10am to 4pm. The eclectic mix of properties includes coastal, native, English cottage, ‘good life’ family, subtropical, modern and even a Mexican styled garden as well as local Julie’s Home Grown Nursery, all looking their best for the ocassion. Refreshments, plants and gifts will be available along the way. Tickets cost $35 and are available from Beachlands Hammer Hardware, Ray White Lighthouse and Julie’s Home Grown Nursery until the end of Friday. Or call Anne Moir on 535-5962. Or on Saturday from Beachlands Baptist Church, 59 Third View Ave, 9am - 10.30am. Apologies, but no children under 12 please. Proceeds from the ramble will go to helping Burmese refugees living on the Thai-Burma border. Please note, there will be no postponement date in case of inclement weather.

No Macca’s for Beachlands...yet! There will be no McDonald’s fast food restaurant at Beachlands...at least not in the forseeable future. A plan of the proposed Countdown and town centre has been circulating locally which clearly shows a McDonald’s on the block of land by the Beachlands roundabout. The result has been a social media storm with dozens of comments on the Pohutukawa Coast Grapevine and PC Times Facebook pages. But McDonald’s Restaurants (NZ) Ltd head office told the PC Times this week that it was all news to them. “McDonald’s has no plans to build a restaurant in Beachlands,” says the company’s communications manager Kim Bartlett. Progressive Enterprises Ltd, which is behind the Countdown and

town centre development at the corner of Beachlands, will make statements via its media office when it has anything to announce. But a source close to Progressive told the PC Times this week that the map now in circulation is indicative only. There will be a commercial building on the corner by the Beachlands roundabout, but just who will occupy it is still a long way from being decided. The source says there is huge interest in retail sites at the proposed town centre but that Progressive is still some months away from signing any tenants. Major earthworks for the new supermarket and town centre are due to start on October 1 next year, although some preliminary work may be carried out in the interim.

How to consult...in 13 easy pages THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz

Auckland Council is always telling us it hasn’t got any money to spend on stuff like roads, swimming pools and libraries. I often wonder how much money it could save by not wasting everyone’s time with ridiculous reports and discussion papers that do nothing other than state the bleedin’ obvious. Another classic example is the council’s Significance and Engagement Policy Consultation Draft - September 2014. Yes, that’s right...the council now has a consultation document about consultation! What the document says is this: The council has an obligation to consult. That consultation takes place at various stages and levels. It needs to include input from local communities, technical experts and research. It needs to follow the council’s broader strategic aims and take into account Government policy and law. Maori need to be consulted on a slightly different basis. And, really, that’s pretty much it. Except in this case it takes 13 pages to tell us, complete with elaborate flow diagrams that someone has obviously gone to a lot of trouble

to design . The document tells us consultation needs to be in plain language and free of jargon. It then gives us statements such as the following: The council’s strategic assets are those vital for the delivery of its services to the community. The council considers its strategic assets as whole single assets (a network) because it is the asset class as a whole that delivers the service. A network is deemed to include those components which are integral to the functioning of the network as a whole. There are also a few iconic assets which have strategic significance for the Auckland region. In addition the LGA 2002 provides that shares in a port company and an airport company and assets required to provide affordable housing are strategic assets. I remember at university having to read the works of Geoffrey Chaucer in the original Middle English and trying to figure out what he was saying. I wonder if, 500 years from now, English students will be poring over nonsense like the above trying to figure out what it means. At least we can agree Chaucer’s Middle English is great literature. I doubt the council’s Significance and Engagement Policy will rise to such dizzy heights. Here’s another example: During the development of a plan or policy, there might be a number of different stages of engagement with the

A Christmas Story Yes, it is that time of the year once more. Thoughts of what presents to buy. What to cook for the family for Christmas Day. Buying a tree and decorating it. All this having been accomplished, the presents are laid under the tree. Sometimes in full view of the front window. Big mistake, as others are also looking for Christmas presents, but are not intending to pay for them. This message is given out each Christmas time, and yet it still goes unheeded. Don’t make it easy for the thief. He does not need help. This year the thief has a new trick. A quick kick at the front door, and hopefully it will open. Even if the alarm goes off, there is still time to grab a few items and be off before anyone has taken notice. The moral of this story? Make sure that your doors are properly secured at all times while you are out. Get a proper mortise lock fitted. Make sure that the door is locked when you go out. Just take care. There has been a spate of car thefts in the past couple of weeks. Not everyone has the comfort of a locked garage, so make sure that your car is secure, and have an immobiliser fitted if possible. It is a lot cheaper than losing the car. Apart from losing the car, don’t leave articles visible in the vehicle at any time. That will be another draw for the would-be thief. A word to the local businesses. With your combined help, it would be possible to set up observation cameras around the area which would benefit both you and the community. No-one likes the thought of Big Brother constantly looking at you through its glassy eye. But in this day and age, we need all of the help we can get. So, can you help us to help yourselves? Remember, if you have a problem, phone 111. They don’t bite. You can download an application form to join Crime Patrol at http://tinyurl.com/mv6yzqg, or phone our local police station on 536 5839. You can text your phone number to 022 0449 130 and we will get back to you.

community using a different level of participation at the different stages. This will vary depending on the decision but for complex issues a targeted group of community and stakeholders might be ‘involved’ to aid the development of a draft document followed by wider ‘consultation’ on the draft document. What intrigues me about this statement, apart from its obvious redundancy, is the use of the single quote marks around the words ‘involved’ and ‘consultation.’ It also talks of engaging ‘collaboratively’ with Maori. These look suspiciously like what grammarians call scare quotes. Scare quotes are quotation marks put around a word to show that the writer doesn’t buy into the meaning. And therein lies the reason for our collective cynicism. We all know from previous experience that no matter how much the council says it wants to consult with us, consultation is not the same as listening. And even if it does listen, it won’t act because it doesn’t really control a planning process that is dictated by the Resource Management Act, and it doesn’t have any money to do anything anyway. Maybe that’s why it has to find something else for our elected representatives to do, namely spend endless hours reading pointless reports.

Bay Remembrance Garden turns 10 Kawakawa Bay’s Remembrance Garden is 10 years old on November 28. The PC Times featured an article and photo of the garden’s opening on its front page of December 3 2004. The garden, situated at the entrance to the Kawakawa Bay Presbyterian Church’s community cottage, was the brain child of Brenda Legg who still retains a close interest in the now very much matured garden area “We need to honour the people who have lived here their whole lives and contributed to the community,” says Brenda. “But there is no cemetery and at that time nowhere to honour them.” Back in 2004 Brenda felt she was prompted by God to come up with

a plan for the Remembrance Garden. She got permission from the church to develop a garden area, drew on paper what she had in mind, and then contacted local landscape gardener Stewart Jenkins for advice. He suggested the plant species that could be used. Developed with volunteer help, the garden incorporates stone and shell from the Bay. “We wanted to make it a lovely place where people could come, sit and remember,” says Brenda. The garden is surrounded by a camellia hedge for privacy and features a spectacular weeping cherry tree. It now also has over 70 remembrance plaques that have been gradually added to by request from families over the

intervening years. Jean Bockman was the first plaque. “She was an amazing missionary who had lived at Orere and walked over before the road was formed to teach Sunday School here. She was just an incredible Christian lady. “It’s just grown from there. Some of the people haven’t lived in the Bay but have had holiday homes here or it has been a special place for them.” “One plaque is for a baby who died from cot death and it’s so lovely that his parents could keep coming to visit knowing he was part of the community. “Another is for a boy killed on the road outside and I’m sure it’s been a comfort to his family that he has a plaque here.”

Brenda Legg in the rembrance garden.

Plaques of remembrance for loved community members. A roster of volunteers keep the garden tidy and watered. There are plans to add a water feature to commemorate the garden’s 10th anniversary.

Big snapper in Orere fishing day The Orere Community & Boating Club held its annual Labour Day Fishing Contest on October 26 with the best results for many years. Over 100 people entered he competition. Heaviest Snapper went to Fenton Williams weighing in at 8.33 kg, followed by Kane Williams with a 6.22kg snapper and in third place Frances Smith with a 5.9 kg snapper. Average weight went to Harb with a 1.31 kg snapper and best results for juniors went to Tommy McFarlane and Fletcher Lugton with

their shared snapper weights of 1.33kg. The fish auction raised $934.30 with all proceeds being donated to the St Johns Ambulance Services. Crowd numbers were somewhere between 3-400 – a big turnout for a small community. Says Club chairman Edward Pram: “I would like to thank the Orere Community & Boating Club Committee, our many volunteers, our Club members and the many residents and visitors who attended. “Special mention to

our sponsors Chis and Nai Loftin, Pak ‘n’ Save Takanini, Manukau Mats, Top Catch Clevedon, Peter Harris, and many others. “We are always looking for sponsors, to assist our contests. Our main goal is to make enough money for the various emergency providers and other groups should they require our help. Meanwhile, the club is having problems staging its annual fireworks event. “We have run into some issues trying to get Auckland Council

approval. In the past we have always gone ahead with Guy Fawkes but this year we wanted to make sure we followed the correct procedures. “We haven’t given up... we could still have our Guy Fawkes just at a different date,” says Edward.

Demand for rental property continues to soar with high numbers of prospective tenants seeking to rent both long term and short term. As this market continues to surge, many owners and investors are well placed to take full advantage of market conditions and may consider a property management service to maximise efficiency and results. For a single fixed fee you receive a complete package – including rent appraisal, assistance in finding a tenant, administration, inspection and supervision of the property, financial reporting, and in some cases, organisation of maintenance and repairs. Apart from planned investment, other factors for letting property may include transferring or relocating to another area or moving in with family. Letting your property even short or medium term can provide a valuable source of income and a property management service can give you guidance on what you can expect – and the reassurance that your property is being well managed on your behalf. In recent weeks our office has had high demand from prospective tenants looking to rent for $500 - $800 per week, in Beachlands, Maraetai, Whitford and environs for periods of 6 months to 24 months. Some are families who are about to build in the area, others have a preference for rental and are looking long term. If you have a property available now or coming up for rental we recommend that you contact us to look at the many advantages a property management service By Peter Brinkley can offer you. Principal

Snow Planet vists pay off Maraetai’s 15-year-old Aleisha Bain (left) has only been snowboarding seriously for about a year, but already she’s made her mark. Aleisha was part of a large Elim College team that took part in the North Island Secondary Schools Snowboard championships at Turoa ski field, Mt Ruapehu. Aleisha came third in the Open Girls’ Slope Style. Slope style involves boarding over a series of of boxes, rails and jumps while being awarded points for style. This was Aleisha’s first competition. Snow boarding first captured her imagination during a visit to Snow Planet on the North Shore at age 8. Now, the Year 10 student still visits Snow Planet about once a fortnight.

BEACHLANDS & MARAETAI Free ice creams! A free ice cream must be very kid’s dream come true. And that’s just what children can get this Saturday from 10am onwards at Karishma Foodmarket in Third View Ave, Beachlands. Owner Sujal Patel will give a free scoop of ice cream to anyone with a “Grand Opening” flyer, available at Karishma. There will also be lots of free gifts for the children – while stocks last. The ice cream giveaway is to mark the launch of Karishma’s new ice cream parlour which is all part of Sujal’s aim of getting his business more involved in the commuity. Karishma used to be run by a manager, but owner Sujal has now taken over the day to day running of the business. He is keen to get people back into his shop to see for themselves the improvements that have been made. Also on Saturday will be opening of a new children’s play area at the back of the shop. The area includes a slide and tables and umbrellas for mum and dad. It will be available for use by customers during store opening hours.
